SUMMARY:Big Richard
DESCRIPTION:The world-class musicians in Big Richard initially convened in 2021 for a festival date. The quartet showed up to the one-off like it had been together for years\, bursting with jaw-dropping virtuosity; playfully irreverent stage banter; stunning four-part harmony vocal interlace; imaginative arrangements; a refreshingly eclectic repertoire; and a healthy dose of lady rage. \nBig Richard siphons from traditional bluegrass\, oldtime\, classical\, modern bluegrass\, country\, and pop. The four-piece band masterfully mash up genres\, often using traditional fiddle tune pieces as instrumental flights of fancy between its storyteller original songs. The group also refreshingly reinvents beloved traditional tunes. \nInstrumental and vocal prowess mixed with charismatic stage presence create an opportunity for live music that should not be missed. \nGet your tickets now for their return show in Winnemucca on March 24th\, 2025.  Tickets on sale now at gbae.org.

SUMMARY:Alash-Tuvan Throat Singers
DESCRIPTION:ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \n

SUMMARY:The Horsenecks
DESCRIPTION:Old Time Music\nThe Horsenecks play hard-hitting and heartfelt\, traditional and original roots music. Their sound is centered around the pairing of the signature rhythmic Appalachian fiddle style of Oregonian Gabrielle Macrae and the inspired guitar and driving yet subtle banjo playing of Liverpudlian Barry Southern. Gabrielle’s playing style is the result of being raised in the Old Time music hotbed of Portland\, OR and being exposed to the fiddle traditions of the Southeast US through years of traveling to festivals and learning from some of the greatest players in the genre. Her love of traditional music brought her to North Carolina as a teenager where she fully immersed herself in the music of the region and gained notoriety in the Old Time Music world as a clawhammer banjo player after releasing an album with the Macrae Sisters in 2008 that received glowing reviews and became one of the iconic Old Time albums of it’s generation. Barry’s banjo playing ranges from thrilling and high-octane to moody and captivating\, and his versatility shines whether playing clawhammer or driving three-finger banjo. Also an accomplished guitarist\, Barry has been consistently active in Liverpools music scene for over 20 years\, playing lead guitar with cult heroes Tramp Attack ( Must Destroy Records) and on into the UK Old Time and Bluegrass scene\, playing with multiple groups. Harmony singing and thoughtful song writing bring The Horsenecks to the stage with a compelling take on the music that moves them; foot-stomping dance tunes\, innovative fiddle-banjo compositions and heartfelt and inspired lyrics and harmony singing. Whether they are singing centuries-old ballads\, their own songs\, or getting you up and dancing with a barn-burning fiddle tune\, they remain firmly rooted in tradition\, paying homage to the depth and richness of the music they have immersed themselves in for the last two decades. \n

SUMMARY:John R Miller
DESCRIPTION:Essential Singer-Songwriter\nJohn R Miller is a true hyphenate artist: singer-songwriter-picker. Every song on his thrilling upcoming debut solo album\, Depreciated\, is lush with intricate wordplay and haunting imagery\, as well as being backed by a band that is on fire.  One of his biggest long-time fans is roots music favorite Tyler Childers\, who says he’s “a well-travelled wordsmith mapping out the world he’s seen\, three chords at a time.” Miller is somehow able to transport us to a shadowy honkytonk and get existential all in the same line with his tightly written compositions. Miller’s own guitar-playing is on fine display here along with vocals that evoke the white-waters of the Potomac River rumbling below the high ridges of his native Shenandoah Valley. \nHis latest album Heat Come Down is an celebration expression of craft and has garnered much attention.  NPR writes\, “On his new album Heat Comes Down\, the West Virginia-raised\, Nashville-based artist intimately narrates his sleepless nights and nostalgic daydreams\, existential dread\, and nuanced observations of the troubled world around him. But while a number of its songs convey a certain unease\, Miller endlessly imparts the kind of lovely reassurance that can only come from shared catharsis.” \nDo not miss this one friends.  $20 tickets available at The Martin Hotel or online at gbae.org. \n \n  \nFor more artist information \nVisit Official Website of John R Miller

Over more than fifty years in music she has established herself as a truly singular voice\, instrumentalist\, and frontwoman in genres that lionize tradition\, “authenticity\,” and emulation. She’s won IBMA Awards\, sung and recorded with Linda Ronstadt\, set poems by Wendell Berry to music – at his request. She’s influenced and inspired folks like guitarist phenom Molly Tuttle\, who’s just one example of an entire generation of pickers and singers who can call her a mentor. All in all\, Lewis has carved out a unique\, superlative niche in American roots music occupied by almost no other musicians and creators. \nHer brand new album\, Trees\, finds Lewis’s music-making rooted in the natural world – as on many past recordings – with a measured and often melancholy view of life\, loss\, and grief that’s resplendent and complicated. An avid walker\, Lewis is both an urban explorer and a wilderness wanderer – plus a self-taught naturalist and conservation ac-tivist. Her skillset in songwriting and recording is usually looking outward\, text-painting to evoke the landscapes she adores and to relay their speaking to us. On Trees\, Lewis looks inward instead\, utilizing all of the literary and naturalist skills at her disposal to ob-serve and process seasonal\, organic\, inevitable life changes. Video Links: Live

SUMMARY:Alash Ensemble-Tuvan Throat Singers
The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \n\nhttps://gbae.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Alash-promo_640x360.m4v

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel
DESCRIPTION:Affecting Singer-Songwriters \nJeffrey Martin returns to delight and devastate our eager ears and hearts with his thoughtful and poetic songs.  Once a high school English teacher\, Martin turned to writing songs and touring full time\, continuing his love of words and stories.  Now\, with three intensely lyric-driven albums under his belt\, two of which were released on the Portland indie-label\, Fluff & Gravy Records\, Martin has developed a loyal and growing audience\, both domestically and abroad. \nJeffrey Martin writes music that probes the depths of the human experience and doesn’t shy away from its darkest corners. His songs can feel like short stories from literary giants like Steinbeck\, Burroughs\, or Cormac McCarthy and possess a raw intensity that comes from seeing his subjects up close. All the struggle\, hurt\, strife\, and heartbreak that comes from living in this world are laid bare and unvarnished\, yet somehow\, Martin manages to mine and make space for what beauty remains.  Jeffrey’s latest album Thank God We Left the Garden was released last month. \nJeffrey will be joined by Anna Tivel. \nOregon based songwriter Anna Tivel’s newest album ‘Outsiders’ starts with a lens so wide we’ve left the planet to look back from a great distance at the turmoil and beauty of our shared humanity. From there the lens pulls close and unfolds in a gripping collection of stories so often ignored. Tivel’s flawed and honest characters move through a landscape of hurt and loss\, of small triumph and big love. In eleven songs full of recognition\, veracity\, and hope\, Tivel’s watchful and empathetic eye details the undeniable ache of living.  \nThroughout her work\, Tivel has emphasized storytelling and this album is no exception\, building on the strength of her ability to observe and reflect with a clear-eyed empathy. Inspired by authors from Steinbeck to Morrison\, Didion to Dubus\, she imbues her songs with attentive detail and a dreamlike quality that leaves the ordinary feeling both palpable and poetic. “Tivel’s characters are common but unforgettable\,” NPR’s Ann Powers writes\, “Her images linger\, and become populated with the energy of the real.” \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Loud As Folk founder Spike McGuire will be celebrating the release of his new album Caught In The Wild (Live). The project was funded in part by a grant from Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment For The Arts \n. The 10 song collection was recorded in Reno\, NV in front of a live audience at Good Luck Macbeth Theater earlier in the year. Spike spent the last decade and a half drawing parallels between the ethos of punk rock and the spirit of folk music by building community and engaging listeners with his message. \nFounded in 2011\, Loud As Folk has become a hub of the west coast songwriting scene focused on highlighting emerging artists with distinct approaches to all genres of American roots music. In the process of bringing these acts together to perform\, a beautiful community naturally formed with artists and audience members alike. SUMMARY:David Jacobs-Strain with Bob Beach
DESCRIPTION:Unapologetically Eclectic\nDavid Jacobs-Strain with Bob Beach\nDavid Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach are a multigenerational\, bicoastal duo who have been performing together since 2010. They currently perform between 70 and 100 shows a year on both east and west coasts\, delighting and bewildering roots music lovers. \nDavid Jacob-Strain is a striking slide guitar player and song poet from Eugene\, Oregon. His deep love of blues and roots music is evident in every one of the songs he writes. He studied masters like Robert Johnson\, Taj Mahal and Jackson Browne\, but plays his own sound\, his own song\, with a virtuosity that is uniquely his. David began playing on street corners and at farmers markets as a teenager\, and bought his first steel guitar with the quarters he saved up.  Before he dropped out of Stanford to play full time\, he had already appeared at festivals across the country\, often billed as a blues prodigy\, but he had to fight to avoid being a novelty act:  “I wanted to tell new stories\, it just wasn’t enough to relive the feelings in other people’s music.” \nDavid Jacobs-Strain has appeared at Merlefest\, Telluride Blues Festival\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\,  Hardly Strictly\, Bumbershoot\, and Blues to Bop in Switzerland.  On the road\, he’s shared the stage with Lucinda Williams\, Boz Scaggs (more than 60 shows)\, Etta James\, The Doobie Brothers\, George Thorogood\, Robert Earle Keen\, Todd Snider\, Taj Mahal\, Janis Ian\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Bob Weir\, T-Bone Burnett\, and Del McCoury. \nBob Beach plays harmonica with calm fierceness. A mouth-harp maestro who swaggers into a solo like The Marlboro Man\, then quietly leaves the set while the rest of us wonder what just happened and how such a tiny instrument could possibly sound like that. Bob has been a working professional musician for more than 40 years bringing harmonica\, flute\, and vocals to a broad scope of genres. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: David Jacobs-Strain
DESCRIPTION:This show has been cancelled due to mountain road closures\n\nUnapologetically Eclectic\nDavid Jacobs-Strain\nDavid Jacob-Strain is a striking slide guitar player and song poet from Eugene\, Oregon.

Eddie 9V (9 Volt) began making waves in the Atlanta\, Georgia roots and blues club circuit at the early age of 15. His debut album\, Left My Soul in Memphis\, was an acclaimed break out record in the Blues and Rock music scene. In 2021\, Eddie V released his latest album Little Black Flies at the fresh age of 25. Rock and Muse Blues publication describes the sound. \n“Rolling horns\, shuffling drums\, melodic keys\, guitar and\, above all\, Eddie’s extraordinary vocals mix to create a hypnotic wonder which oozes authenticity. His delivery has an unfettered\, semi-improvised vibe\, the voice itself astonishingly expressive\, with a classic blues rawness and charming ingenuousness.” \nDon’t miss a chance to see Eddie 9V\, young talented roller spreading his raw\, soulful\, and surely electric vibe!

SUMMARY:Tony Furtado
DESCRIPTION:Americana Roots Master\nVery few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. \nTony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele. He mixes and matches sounds and styles with the ?air of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor\, but that’s another story). All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.” \nA native of Pleasanton\, California\, who now makes his home in Portland\, Oregon\, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12\, inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies television show and a sixth-grade music report. He ?rst attracted national attention in 1987\, when he won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Win?eld\, Kansas. Soon after Tony was collaborating with such master musicians as Laurie Lewis\, Alison Krauss\, Jerry Douglas\, Tim O’Brien\, Stuart Duncan\, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. \nBeginning in the late 1990s – in?uenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder\, David Lindley and Taj Mahal – Tony added slide guitar\, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats. \nTony has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such prestigious music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival\, High Sierra Music Festival\, Jazz Aspen\, Kerrville Folk Festival\, Strawberry Music Festival\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Sisters Folk Festival\, San Jose Jazz Festival and countless others. \nDon’t miss this Americana music virtuoso playing a long-awaited show at The Martin Hotel. \n \n

SUMMARY:Cary Morin Duo
DESCRIPTION:Native Americana Fingerstyle Blues\n \nDescribed as “one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today\,” Cary Morin brings together the great musical traditions of America like no other.  With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty work-weariness\, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass\, folk\, blues\, and rock.  He has performed at renowned venues across the globe\, including The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center\, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades.  David Bromberg remarks\, “Cary Morin is a unique and brilliant guitar player\, songwriter and singer.  As a guitar player\, I have huge respect for Cary’s style and technique…If you haven’t heard him yet\, you should.
