The Nevada Arts Council, teaming up with Great Basin Arts and Entertainment, is bringing two separate but closely related events to Winnemucca on Wednesday, November 12. Both events will take place at the Winnemucca City Hall. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
The first event is a Grants Workshop that will be of interest to anyone that is considering applying for grant funding, or would like to sharpen their skills in grant writing. While the focus of the presentation is designed for “arts grants” the information on developing a competitive grant application is transferable to any grant writing endeavor. The Grant Workshop will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the City Hall.
The second event, scheduled to begin at 7:30 at the City Hall, is a facilitated Community Conversation about the State of the Arts in Winnemucca, and is a program designed to engage artists, organizations, educators, audience members, and community leaders in a discussion about the current and future role of the arts in Winnemucca, and to provide valuable input to the Nevada Arts Council (NAC) on how to best serve the citizens and communities throughout the state.
Grants Workshops
Grant writing specialists Janice Welborn-Downing from Gunnison, CO and Kendall Hardin of Las Vegas will present free workshops throughout Nevada in October and November. This year’s workshops will focus on two important elements of preparing a competitive and compelling grant application: writing the narrative and preparing supplemental materials. These workshops are designed for anyone thinking about applying for grants – artists, educators, arts organizations, schools, public institutions and nonprofit community groups.
Janice Welborn’s 30 years of national experience and professional training in a variety of subject areas provides her with the tools to explore the possibilities with non-profit professionals and board members as they seek funding and professional development. Janice’s many endeavors include conducting grant writing workshops, designing and facilitating large and small group collaborative meetings and strategic planning sessions, program development and evaluation.
Janice is the Director of Sponsored Programs at Western State College of Colorado, the owner of Welborn and Associates, and the one of the three organizers and sponsors of the Rocky Mountain Nonprofit conference held annually in Colorado. She has been consulting with non-profits and local governments on the Western Slope of Colorado for 22 years.
Kendall Hardin of Las Vegas, with more than two decades of experience as a consultant for small businesses and non-profit organizations, is a veteran grants writer and mentor.. She has assisted dozens of communities in designing planning projects and establishing cultural arts districts. A popular presenter and trainer, Ms. Hardin’s workshops have been offered to more than 400 groups. A nationally recognized arts leader, Ms. Hardin was selected as one of 12 consultants for the National Endowment for the Arts Advancement Program, impacting emerging and established organizations across the country.
An award winning graphic designer and fiber artist, Hardin received her bachelor’s degree in art history and graphic communication from the University of Illinois and her master’s degree in art history from Ohio State University.
With the mandated budget cuts for FY2010 and the increase in competition for NAC grant dollars, we strongly recommend both new applicants and present grantees to attend a workshop. Professional Development Grants of up to $250 are available for constituents who must travel more than 100 miles roundtrip to attend the workshop closest to their home.
Both novice and experienced grant writers will take home valuable information, reducing anxiety about “getting it right” and building confidence that you’ve written a competitive proposal.
Arts Council staff will be on hand after the workshops to answer questions about the various grant changes that the NAC will implement starting with FY2010. To view these changes, please visit our website at www.nevadaculture.org.
We welcome walk-ins at our workshops, but prefer that you register at least a week before the workshop so we may better plan our presentations. To help defray the costs of the workshops, there will be a $10 charge for participants.

Conversations About the Arts
The Nevada Arts Council (NAC) is facilitating Community Conversations across Nevada this year to explore the state of the arts and to hear about the needs of our communities and their artists, organizations, educators and audience members. This process will provide us with valuable information from both the arts industry and the public that will help us shape Values and Vision: A Cultural Plan for Nevada, 2010 – 2015. This document will guide the actions of the Nevada Arts Council as it serves the citizens and communities of the state.
Your contribution to this process is extremely important. We strongly encourage you to join us at your local community conversation to share your thoughts with your neighbors and colleagues, and members of the Arts Council staff and board
In conjunction with the Community Conversations process, in November a Values and Vision Public Comment Survey will be available on our website at www.nevadaculture.org. and everyone in the state with an interest in the arts is urged to participate and add their voice to the conversation.
Before you fill out a survey or attend an Community Conversation, we strongly suggest that you review the current Values and Vision Plan/Update, also available at our website.
Results from the Community Conversations and online survey will be discussed at session during Arts4Nevada: A Statewide Convening, to be held in Reno, March 5-7, in conjunction with the 29th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards and Arts Day in Nevada (sponsored by the Nevada Arts Advocates).
