Where Do You Go from Tonopah?

Gailmarie Pahmeier

Because the Mizpah Hotel has claw foot tubs,
this is where you stop. This place has its own
ghost, a good story about The Lady in Red.
It’s said she was murdered here, discovered
by her husband in the arms of her young love.
She’d have lived to wear her lace and heels
if it hadn’t been for the train being late,
her husband missing his connection, stopping
in for a cold drink, seeing her, seeing him
ascend the steep stairs. In Nevada,
it’s always about trains, drinks, connections
missed and made and wholly imagined.

Because, you’re told, Tonopah is for those
with a thirst for adventure, you venture
into the Long Shot Bar, order steaks,
a fine red wine and, arguably, the best
margarita between Reno and Las Vegas,
listen to some old man chat up the young
couple from Henderson who say this is
the farthest north they’ve been, exploring
their new state, transplants from Atlanta.
The old man says this is the real Nevada,
but suggests they also make Elko, Winnemucca,
decent towns he’s fond of, would live in, given…

And because you love books and the beauty
of dust, you’ll spend hours wandering
the dense aisles of Whitney’s Bookshelf,
where paperbacks are a dollar hardbacks, two.
What you’ll take home is a first edition,
hardback, John Gardner’s On Moral Fiction.
Inside is a personal inscription, June 1978.
Bob, it says, keep writing in NYC. Thanks
for all your help these two years in Tonopah.
Best of luck. I’ll miss you here. Love Jack.

This event is made possible by support of Nevada Arts Council and funds donated in memory of Aliceann Doyle.

CANCELLED: David Jacobs-Strain

This show has been cancelled due to mountain road closures

Unapologetically Eclectic

David Jacobs-Strain

David Jacob-Strain is a striking slide guitar player and song poet from Eugene, Oregon. His deep love of blues and roots music is evident in every one of the songs he writes. He studied masters like Robert Johnson, Taj Mahal and Jackson Browne, but plays his own sound, his own song, with a virtuosity that is uniquely his. David began playing on street corners and at farmers markets as a teenager, and bought his first steel guitar with the quarters he saved up.  Before he dropped out of Stanford to play full time, he had already appeared at festivals across the country, often billed as a blues prodigy, but he had to fight to avoid being a novelty act:  “I wanted to tell new stories, it just wasn’t enough to relive the feelings in other people’s music.”

David Jacobs-Strain has appeared at Merlefest, Telluride Blues Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival,  Hardly Strictly, Bumbershoot, and Blues to Bop in Switzerland.  On the road, he’s shared the stage with Lucinda Williams, Boz Scaggs (more than 60 shows), Etta James, The Doobie Brothers, George Thorogood, Robert Earle Keen, Todd Snider, Taj Mahal, Janis Ian, Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Weir, T-Bone Burnett, and Del McCoury.

Eddie 9V

Cathartic Blues from Georgia

Eddie 9V

Join us for some cool retro-blues, served up hot. Eddie 9V (9 Volt) began making waves in the Atlanta, Georgia roots and blues club circuit at the early age of 15. His debut album, Left My Soul in Memphis, was an acclaimed break out record in the Blues and Rock music scene. In 2021, Eddie V released his latest album Little Black Flies at the fresh age of 25. Rock and Muse Blues publication describes the sound.

“Rolling horns, shuffling drums, melodic keys, guitar and, above all, Eddie’s extraordinary vocals mix to create a hypnotic wonder which oozes authenticity. His delivery has an unfettered, semi-improvised vibe, the voice itself astonishingly expressive, with a classic blues rawness and charming ingenuousness.”

Don’t miss a chance to see Eddie 9V, young talented roller spreading his raw, soulful, and surely electric vibe!

Tony Furtado

Americana Roots Master

Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music.

Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele. He mixes and matches sounds and styles with the ?air of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story). All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”

A native of Pleasanton, California, who now makes his home in Portland, Oregon, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12, inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies television show and a sixth-grade music report. He ?rst attracted national attention in 1987, when he won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Win?eld, Kansas. Soon after Tony was collaborating with such master musicians as Laurie Lewis, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall.

Beginning in the late 1990s – in?uenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal – Tony added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats.

Tony has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such prestigious music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and countless others.

Don’t miss this Americana music virtuoso playing a long-awaited show at The Martin Hotel.

Cary Morin Duo

Native Americana Fingerstyle Blues

Described as “one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today,” Cary Morin brings together the great musical traditions of America like no other.  With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty work-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock.  He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades.  David Bromberg remarks, “Cary Morin is a unique and brilliant guitar player, songwriter and singer.  As a guitar player, I have huge respect for Cary’s style and technique…If you haven’t heard him yet, you should. Try to remember that it’s only one guitar.”

Along with his life partner, Celeste Di lorio, together they form the Cary Morin Duo.  Cleste has her own history in the world of performance, having been involved in dance, theater, and music for many years.  She is a vocalist and, as she would say, “a strummer on guitar.”  Celeste has played and sung with Cary for over 11 years.

Willy Tea Taylor and Dylan Nicholson

Two Singer-Songwriters

Willy Tea Taylor

His remarkable ability to sing about profound subjects in a simple way makes his songs a great place to lose yourself.

Willy grew up in Oakdale, California, known as “The Cowboy Capital of the World.” There, he developed a love of story and baseball, which led naturally to devoting himself as a folksinger.

As a young man he was convinced of his path after seeing Greg Brown at Strawberry Festival where years later he would play main stage in 2015. Since then he has recorded two albums, “4 Strings” and “Knuckleball Prime,” with increasing accolades.

Dylan Nicholson

Dylan is the guitar player and vocalist from the California Duo The Turkey Buzzards.  The bare authenticity of his songs sweeps up listeners and takes them on a wandering journey.

Dylan will open with a solo set then play with Willy for the main set.

Margo Cilker and Ismay

Friday, August 19th 7pm

Two Singer-Songwriters: Margo Cilker and Ismay

Margo Cilker

“Margo Cilker’s weathered voice, an instrument that conjures up visions of wide-open spaces and wanderlust, has quickly made her one of (Oregon’s) linchpins.” -NPR Music

Eastern Oregon songwriter Margo Cilker, who NPR calls one of “11 Oregon Artists to Watch,” has split her time between the road and various outposts across the world, from Enterprise, Ore. to the Basque Country of Spain, forging a path that is at once deeply rooted and ever-changing.

Her hard work during the pandemic has paid off with recognition in both the rural western scene and across the globe.  Her latest LP, Pohorylles, produced by NW Indie-Rocker Sera Cahoone, is racking up well-deserved praise.  Being compared to Lucinda Williams, Margo delivers beautifully arranged meaningful songs with vivid lyrics and keen observations.

Don’t miss a chance to come see this up and coming star.

Ismay

“Every song weaved around the sights, sounds, and feel of the surrounding land and guided gently by Ismay’s meticulous guitar and delicately captivating vocals.” -American Songwriter

Ismay’s songwriting connects deeply to the land. Melding the experience of taming wild horses, escaping wildfires, and birthing lambs with the mystical soundscape that nature inspires, Ismay has sharpened their musical craft over the last decade while living and working on their family ranch in Northern California.

Songs of Sonoma Mountain, their debut full length album, was recorded in the family barn and released in 2020, to rave reviews. Ismay represents the collaborative work driven by singer-songwriter Avery Hellman, who grew up backstage at their grandfather’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, where they were inspired early on by artists such as Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Hazel Dickens.
